How to Overcome Writer’s Block and Stay Motivated

Some days it may be difficult to get motivated to write. Maybe you don’t feel good, maybe your mind is on other things, or maybe you’re just discouraged because one of your articles didn’t get published. As a writer it is important to stay motivated at all times and to always keep writing. For a writer writing is the most important thing in their day to day life. I am a full time freelance writer, so I know how important motivation is. If I don’t keep writing I can’t pay my bills. Sometimes I lose my motivation, but over the past year of doing this full time I have come up with ways to keep myself motivated even when motivation seems to be far away from me.

Treat Your Writing Career as You Would Any Other Job

Set a schedule in which you will write. I prefer to write Monday through Friday, regularly, and then sneak in some work on the weekends if I have time. You don’t want to work seven days a week or you’ll get burnt out. Pick a time you plan to start and a time you plan to end, just like any work schedule. Set a time when you start working, times for your breaks, and a time your work day will end. Write yourself up for being late by taking away one of your breaks.

Write Even When You Don’t Feel Like Writing

Again, the most important thing for a writer is writing. If you aren’t writing anytime you can you will not be successful. This is true whether you are a professional, technical or freelance writer. It is also the same even if you are a book author. If you have no inspiration, no idea of what to write, just write the first thing that comes to mind. Write about what you are feeling. Write a list of things you’ve thought about writing in the past and then pick one to start writing. The point? Just write, anything and everything. Once you start writing you’ll get over your lack of inspiration and lack of motivation and you’ll be back on track again.

A lack of motivation when it comes to writing can also be a form of writer’s block. Writer’s block can be overcome by taking a break, meditating and clearing the mind. Then go back and start writing, again, about anything and everything that comes to mind. Don’t let yourself get frustrated when you think you just can’t write. All that frustration does is pull you farther away from writing. When unsure, when in doubt, just write!
