How to Get an FCC Restricted Radiotelephone Operator Permit

The FCC issues restricted operator permits for limited types of radiotelephones. This is fairly easy to get, as there is no exam requirement. However, only certain individuals qualify for a restricted radiotelephone operator permit.

This type of FCC permit is used to operate most aeronautical and aircraft ground stations. It also authorizes the operation of a limited number of maritime radiotelephone stations on pleasure craft. However, it does not permit such operations for more than 6 passengers for voyages in the open seas or Great Lakes or bays or tidewaters.

This permit is not required to operate every kind of radiotelephone in existence. For example, you do not need such a license to operate an aircraft station that operates on VHF only and does not make foreign flights. To see all of the other radiotelephone operations that do not require a restricted permit, use the “Main Page” link in the Resources at the end of this article.

First, all applicants must be either a citizen, legal resident, or holder of a work visa for work in the United States. They must also be able to speak and hear.

The other general requirements are that an applicant for an FCC restricted radiotelephone operator permit must be able to keep a rough written log and be familiar with laws, rules, and treaties that govern the radio station that the applicant will be operating.

Once issued, the holder of this permit does not have to renew. It is good for life.
