How to Create a Killer Black Bedroom

Decorating a black bedroom can present a number of challenges. Since you don’t have the benefit of color to create interest, you have to rely a solid design to carry the room. Lean heavily on furniture, lighting and accessory selections to make it special. Bring in a few signature pieces or extraordinary artwork. With the right combinations, you’ll have a black bedroom that’s both elegant and interesting.

• Black Walls

It takes a lot of guts to paint the walls of a bedroom black. If you’re up to the challenge, flat paint is usually a better choice than satin or semi gloss. A flat texture on the walls offers contrast to sleek furniture or accessories.

One alternative is to use black wallpaper. Tone-on-tone black wallpaper is chic and brings instant style to the space. Another alternative is to cover the walls with wood units built around the bed. Stained in espresso or other black derivative stain, wood can warm up a black bedroom in a heartbeat.

• Lighting

Using black as the main event in your bedroom means the room will be dark and it will need lighting to perk it up. Spotlights, track lights and recessed ceiling lights can all be strategically placed to bring light exactly where it’s needed. Chandeliers have lots of light with multiple candles and always offer character in decorating.

If you can’t find black fixtures, metallic or mirrored lighting works quite well with black, too. They offer a surface that isn’t necessarily black, but reflects the black furnishings in the room.

• Bedding

All black bedding, like wallpaper, looks smart in tone-on-tone patterns. However, if you’re going to bring small amounts of color into your black bedroom, bedding is a good place to do it. If you don’t want to add another color, consider white bedding. It complements the black without compromising a black theme.

• Flooring

Black flooring can come in the form of painted or stained concrete or wood planks with black undertones. If you stray from your black theme, the floor is another place to do it. White or grey in any shade makes a wonderful floor in a black bedroom – especially if you want to use carpet.

• Artwork

If there’s one universal truth about a black bedroom, it’s that is it the perfect backdrop for artwork. A black wall offers no competition to the design or color in your artwork and, therefore, whatever you display can really shine. There’s no need for elaborate framing – just put your artwork in a plain white frame or mat and even the simplest artwork will pop on a black wall.
