How to Cope with a Sloppy Roommate

College is an exciting experience.. New classes, meeting new people, going to fun get-togethers with your friends on the weekends and then there is living in a dorm away from your parents. Some people have their friends to dorm with while others are randomly paired up together with strangers. You probably thought that living in a dorm with someone you don’t know wouldn’t be so bad.. But than you found out how horribly messy this person is.

If you’re like me, you like to stay organized and keep your room and/or home clean and tidy. And it can be very hard to do that if you are living with someone who is constantly messing up everything you just cleaned. I know the feeling that comes with just cleaning and than someone comes in and throws something on the floor or just leaves their drawers open with clothes hanging out of them. It’s not easy to deal with.

If your roommate leaves their messes all over the room and it’s not something that you can deal with any longer, here are some tips that will help you keep the dorm clean even when you have a messy roommate.

1. Always keep your area of the room clean.
If you are always keeping your area clean, maybe your roommate will see how good it looks to keep organized and they’ll follow your example. Or they could see that you like to keep things clean so they’ll try harder to keep their areas clean.

Tips for keeping your dorm clean:

-Buy a dustpan that has a small handled broom attached to keep your floor clean. If you have carpets, you could purchase a small handheld vacuum instead.
-Keep paper towels or a duster in with your belongings to dust every once in a while.
-Every student should have organizational tools to help them keep track of their homework and projects, so be sure you have them for yourself.

2. Show your roommate the positive effects of staying organized.
If your grades are good, good organization has something to do with it. Show your roommate that your organization really helps you with your studies and that if they kept more organized, they’d do better with their studies as well.

3. Talk to your roommate.
You need to make your roommate aware of your feelings about their sloppiness. If you don’t speak up, they will never know that their messes bother you. So be sure you tell your roommate how you feel.

If you’ve tried to say something and it just gets worse and worse, you may want to consider trying to get a new roommate or getting a place of your own.
