How to Approach God in Prayer

It can be so easy in today’s world to set our own agenda to follow. The chaos may make it seem impossible to approach God in prayer. However, it is vital to seek God’s guidance and direction every day. You need to come to God with the right spirit which contains certain attributes.

Approach God with a Humble Spirit

Go to God in awe and reverence. “He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way” (Psalms 25:9, NIV). Go to God, saying, “Thy will be done.”

Approach God with a Teachable Spirit

Be open and willing to learn. Spiritual growth occurs when you approach God acknowledging the need to learn. David said, “Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long” (Psalms 25:4-5, NIV).

Approach God with an Attentive Spirit

Spend quiet time alone with God while concentrating on listening to God and meditating on God’s Word. “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalms 46:10, NIV).

Approach God with an Expectant Spirit

Go to God in anticipation and thanksgiving. “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, NIV).

As you pray, your priority is to listen to Him. You are fulfilled by God directing your path. “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (1 John 5:14, NIV). Approach God with a humble spirit, a teachable spirit, an attentive spirit, and an expectant spirit.
