Homemade Flea Powder Recipe for Dogs

Dogs and fleas go hand in hand, but the only ones that like that situation are the fleas. Fleas make their way into the home on the dog and soon take up residence in carpets and furniture. Fleas can take over a home and bite the people living in the home or visiting. Fleas leave dogs and their people scratching constantly and feeling miserable. Some dogs don’t react well to chemical-based flea powders and some owners just don’t like sprinkling harsh chemicals over their dog, making a natural alternative the key to ridding the dog of fleas.

Pour a 1-pound box of fresh baking soda into a large lidded bowl.

Measure 12 to 16 drops of either lavender essential oil or cedar essential oil. Choose the scent you prefer, both oils are equally effective. Add one drop of oil in various places over the surface of the baking soda. Place the lid on the bowl and shake it for three to five minutes to distribute the lavender or cedar oil throughout the baking soda. Leave the lid on the bowl for an hour or so.

Fill a clean coffee can with a plastic lid with the scented baking soda. Place the lid on the can and poke several holes through the top with a metal skewer.

Bring the dog outside to minimize the mess.

Hold the dog or have a helper hold the dog and generously sprinkle the flea powder on the dog using care to staying away from his eyes and nose.

Massage the flea powder into the dog’s fur and down to his skin for 10 to 15 minutes.

Let your dog have a good shake and then brush the baking soda out of his fur.
