The Merry-Go-Round is one of the long lived kids activities of Griffith Park. Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round was built in 1926 by the Spillman Engineering Company, but it didn’t reach Griffith Park until years later. It was taken to Griffith Park in 1937. For more than 70 years it has been on the list of long time family attractions and kids activities. It is the only full size Spillman carousel still in operation today.
Historical Griffith Park Merry-Go-Round is furnished with great handcrafted detail. This historical Merry-Go-Round has 68 horses that have not lost their jump or up and down motion. The horse blankets have been covered with detail. Each blanket is decorated with sunflowers and lion’s heads. The horses have been made with real horse-hair tails. The bridles are encrusted with jewels and each horse has been finely carved.
The historical Merry-Go-Round carousel plays over 1500 musical choices of marches and waltz. It is believed to be the largest band organ carousel in the West Coast, with a Stinson 165 Military Band Organ.
The Merry-Go-Round is located in Park Center between the Los Angeles Zoo and the entrance to the Los Feliz park.
