Ground Your Bed in Asian Style

Are you planning to decorate a bedroom with an Asian influence? Then you’ll probably want to bring your bedding down to ground level. Simple, low structures are the center of an elegant Asian inspired bedroom design. From platforms to bed frames, you can create the perfect sleeping space. Let me show you how.

• Cushions on a Platform

Many pieces of Asian furniture include large cushions to sit or recline on. You can create a simple sleeping platform by building a low deck that only rises eight inches up from the floor. Then add a cushion-style mattress foundation to sleep on. If you can’t find a cushion-style mattress, but love the look, you still have options. You can cover an old futon mattress in a solid color material and place it on the platform to complete your ensemble.

• Padded Structures

If you want a modern spin on Asian design, look for a padded mattress and bed structure that sits low to the ground to create soft sleeping quarters. The soft lines look like a cloud sitting on the floor and inviting you to climb in. It’s like a platform bed without the platform and a definite conversation piece.

• Platforms with a Mattress

You can also use an ordinary mattress on a simple platform to bring your resting place close to the floor. Just center your mattress on the platform and wrap it tightly in a solid color blanket. You can wrap a runner at the foot of the bed for a little extra interest – but, don’t overdo the bedding. Simple and serene is the look you’re trying to achieve.

• Low Level Bed Frames

If you like the look of a bed close to the floor, but want something a little more substantial than a wood deck or platform, shop for a low level bed frame that can house your mattress and box spring. Although the box spring will raise the surface of the bed, you can still get that Zen feeling with a sleek, Asian designed bed frame. Instead of propping up your bed pillows against the headboard, lay them flat to keep the assembly neat and grounded.
