Fruit Salad Jack-O-Lantern

When I put up Halloween decorations, year after year, I enjoy mixing some of the old decorations with some new things. Because, each year, I end up discovering new crafts and projects to create something different, but I don’t really want to do away with the things I already have. You might be the same way; maybe you look for new things each year but enjoy putting out things from previous years as well. That can go for decorations, foods, candy, and more. Everything doesn’t have to be pumpkins and bats, ghosts and goblins. Sometimes I enjoy just doing something silly for Halloween, rather than making all spooky things – especially when it comes to the food. A lot of people serve edible fingers and eyeballs but those kinds of treats can be a little disconcerting for a child. Whether you’re serving kids or adults they’ll all be thrilled with miniature jack-o-lanterns which are also fruit bowls.

Don’t go out to buy a bunch of those really tiny pumpkins to make this year’s fruit salad jack-o-lantern. Instead, purchase ordinary oranges. They can be easily turned into miniature jack-o-lanterns that are scrumptious and adorable.

When you’re turning the orange into a jack-o-lantern just treat it as if it was a regular pumpkin. Cut a circle off of the top then cut around the inside to remove the orange sections. If you want, cut up the orange pieces and use them in the fruit salad.

Cut a little jack-o-lantern face out of the front of the orange, using a small, paring knife. Cut triangular eyes, and a toothy smile, or design your own jack-o-lantern.

Cut and mix fruit yourself or just open up a can of fruit cocktail. If you’re using the orange pieces, mix them in with the other fruit. Fill each orange with the fruit cocktail.

Cut a hole in the top of each orange and add a disposable spoon. Slide the handle of the spoon up through the hole, from the bottom, then place the spoon in the orange. Slide the top down the length of the spoon to rest it on top of the orange.

The fruit cocktail orange bowls are really cute and delicious as well. If you want, you can use grapefruits instead of oranges. Serve the fruit bowls at a party or just to your own family. They’re great for kids and adults and, when everyone’s finished eating, it’s all disposable.
