Free EFL/ESL Conversation Activity/Game: Candies for Your Thoughts

If you like using candies in your activities/games to get your students to speak in English, here’s a free EFL/ESL conversation activity/game for you. In “Candies for Your Thoughts”, students receive a colored-piece of candy and then share their comments about the overall effectiveness of an exercise, lesson or course. It’s up to you to decide what you’d like your students to share their comments on. “Candies for Your Thoughts” is a free EFL/ESL conversation activity/game that I’ve used in many of EFL/ESL courses. My students love it, and the best thing is that it helps them to improve their English.

Step 1: Buy some candy that has at least four different colors. Starbursts, M and Ms and/or skittles are good solutions.

Step 2: Choose a theme/topic and open a discussion with students. Note any mistakes and/or improvements that could be made.

Step 3: Pass the bag of candy around the room and have each participant choose a piece of candy. Tell them not to eat the candy until the end of the activity.

Step 4: Inform students that each color corresponds to a type of comment. For example, yellow requires a person to say what he/she liked about the workshop and/or theme/topic; red requires a person to say what he/she didn’t like; orange requires a person to say what he/she would have done differently; pink requires a person to say what he/she has learned. Have students take turns in sharing their comments.
