Facebook Making College Students Better Students

I remember being a senior in high school just two short years ago and being scolded and reprimanded for getting on Facebook during Computer Apps or Journalism. I always knew college would be different, but if you would have told me in high school that less than a year later I would part of an English 1101 Facebook group started by Dr. Anthony Wilson, also known as “Slick Willy” for his prowess of Social Networking and his overall swagger as a professor. The group was an instrumental tool of learning in my Freshman English class I would have thought you were crazy. Well thank goodness that college is a little different, because logging on to my Facebook account turned out to be a great reminder to do my homework! In that class we used Facebook as a way to post assignments, communicate with the Professor and ask each other and him questions about what we were reading or writing at the time.

A year later after declaring myself as a Political Science major I joined the department’s Facebook page, which has been a tremendous help to me. Not only can I keep up with current political events, but through this Facebook page I can keep up with departmental news and have made valuable contacts with LaGrange College alumni who use the page. Without the LC Poli Sci Facebook page I would not have been able to include an alumni section to the Poli Sci Newsletter that I founded earlier this month. I am currently taking Comparative Politics and my professor, Dr. John A. Tures created a Facebook page for our class, after being inspired by Dr. Wilson’s idea. So far the page has been a huge part of the communication for the class. As a matter of fact last night I started a chain reaction when I made a wall post that asked for a certain assignment for our class research project. The page is a great way for us to communicate with students of the class and the professor, I can even check the syllabus while I’m on Facebook!

I also just became a member of the Facebook group “Sociologists of Lagrange” that was started by our new Sociology professor as a way to post articles about Social issues happening around the world.
