Facebook and College Admissions

What if our favorite thing to do on the Internet, our so-called best friend, could be our enemy? Could our Facebook page betray us?

When applying to colleges, something always to be aware of is your Facebook account. Many students do not know this, but college admission directors are searching for their applicant’s Facebook for obscene messages and inappropriate language.

So now, after reading that, most of you will say “I have all my privacy settings on.” That doesn’t matter. Colleges make fake spy pages and try and find you.

A Boston University study in 2009, said that 38 percent of admissions directors check out their applicants’ pages. The study went on to say that 8 percent of those students who were checked were declined acceptance from the school.

To take precaution, it is best to delete the images, posts and tags that should not be there. If you have to think about it being inappropriate, it probably is.

Also, another crucial thing to do is make sure none of your friends writes vulgarity on your walls as a joke. Discuss this issue with people who are known for this.

Make sure to include past statuses in your deleting process. Just because it’s not on the first page of your profile, doesn’t mean the colleges will not go to things you did in the past.

Finally, do not accept any friend request from someone you do not know. You need to stay clear of these fake spy profiles, as well as predators.

If you take all these tips and apply them to your Facebook, you will certainly have no problem getting into college. Oh yeah, and study hard too.
