Liverpool is an interesting city with so much to offer! You can enjoy live theatres, museums, art galleries, comedy clubs, and more. In fact, the Queen came to Liverpool a few years ago to see “Phantom of the Opera.” Beatles’ fans will want to take one of several Beatles Tours to visit John Lennon and Sir Paul McCartney’s homes, the Cavern Club, Penny Lane, Strawberry Fields, schools and favorite places. Learn about Liverpool’s ghosts on the Shiverpool ghost tour. See the Anglican Cathedral, the largest cathedral in Britain and the fifth largest in the world. Their war museums allow you to relive wartime Britain with commentary on the battles. If you want to buy the latest British fashions or remembrances of your trip, the largest new shopping center in Europe just opened with 42 acres for you to explore. Along the river, you can rent kayaks or other boats. For a touch of the orient, China Town is recognized as being both the largest established Chinese community and largest dragon gate outside China. Among the diverse possibilities, you can even tour the stadium of Liverpool Football Club. Most film companies have chosen Liverpool of all of the United Kingdom cities outside London, which includes the “51st State” and “The Hunt for Red October.”

I usually prefer staying at a hotel within the city to give us a chance to walk around and see the sights. The Liverpool Marriott City Centre is across from theatres, near restaurants, stores, and pubs. I have stayed at several Marriot Hotels and feel they all keep high standards in comfort and customer satisfaction for their accommodations and restaurants. I particularly appreciate their special care in choosing luxury bedding with 300 thread- count linens, fluffier pillows, and down comforters. Everything the traveler needs for a good night’s sleep. Even high- speed internet access for us to keep up with what is happening at the office back in the United States. The extras are important. Their marble and tile bathrooms have aromatherapy lotions and plush towels. For special occasions, the Liverpool Marriott City Centre’s team of Event Managers arranges parties, family reunions, business conferences, weddings and other events.
Oliver’s Restaurant, inside the Marriott, gave us the feeling we could relax after a busy day of sightseeing and shopping. I tried the local specialty lamb shank Scouse, the traditional stew of Liverpool. The lamb was basted 2-1/2 to 3 hours then cooked slowly for 3 hours. The lamb was very tender along with potatoes, carrots, celery and onions in wine gravy. The Senior Sous Chef, Melchon Obonzen, or “Choy,” explained, “We will cook your food any way you want and are always happy to accommodate our guests. I love this place, they have the freshest food!
The Goosnargh free range chickens are from a village in Lancashire, the vegetables and beer are local. We add our own tweak to dishes. Our cuisine is British with Italian and Asian influences.”
