Choosing the Best Cartridge for Your Deer Hunting Location

The location you choose to deer hunt will determine which cartridge you should use. The 30-30 WCF & 32 Winchester Special and the 30-06 Springfield will cover just about every location in Georgia.

The 30-30 Winchester Special is possibly the most popular cartridge among deer hunters, one that I, myself use. It is a great short range cartridge for deer hunting in thick woods and brush. It is not suitable for long distances due to its light weight and low velocity and isn’t accurate enough for small game nor powerful enough for larger game, such as moose.

The military started using the 30-06 Springfield cartridge in 1906. It is probably the most versatile round and is great for big game, including some North American game. It comes in many different bullets including 110-gr. for small game, 150-gr., up to 220-gr. for big game. My husband prefers the 180-gr. and feels it to be the best all-purpose round. It holds plenty of knock down power and shoots fairly flat, allowing an accurate shot from a great distance.
