I had a long talk with my father today
I want to relate some things he had to say
He ask how do you not work and still get paid
How on a first date do you expect to get laid
Why are there more lawyers than granules of sand
What happened to one’s word and shake of the hand
I tried to answer him but to my chagrin
He looked down and started to ask questions again
Who are these people who get stamps for food
And strangers you meet just seem to be rude
He said When I was young my father would say
Respect your elders and work hard for your pay
Help your neighbor and do the best that you can
Grow up with pride and honor, be a good man
I said those days are gone the world’s a changed place
We forgot about church and the good Lord’s grace
Its all about what you have or what you can take
Not about doing good just for goodness sake
