American Music Awards 2011 Fashion Review — Metallics Rule the Red Carpet, Selena Gomez Sparkles, Justin Bieber Bombs

With the Winter holiday season in full swing, many celebrities hit the November 20 American Music Awards red carpet decked out looking like, well, Christmas tree ornaments. Sparkly, shimmery metallic looks dominated the pack, with stars both young and not-so-young apparently channeling their inner-disco balls for fashion inspiration. Here’s a look at the best –and not-so-best– looks of the silver and gold bunch. (Quick tip: Click each celeb’s name to see the look.)

Taylor Swift

Taylor’s golden super-sparkler by Reem Acra was suspiciously reminiscent of some of her previous red carpet looks, but we can forgive the night’s big winner for a lack of originality. She avoided the too-much-bling pitfall that’s downed many a celeb by pairing her glittering bejeweled strapless gown with an appropriately simple side ponytail and small green drop earrings. Maybe best of all, Taylor went without her usual bright red lipstick, allowing her natural beauty and fresh skin to shine through. Bravo.

Jennifer Hudson

First off, a hearty ‘you go girl’ to the Oscar winner for getting healthy, dropping the pounds and having the confidence to show off her new bod. But –and here’s where things get harsh– Jennifer’s metallic silver AMA number wasn’t a super shiny pick. The Jenny Packham creation featured intriguing draping along the bustline and Jennifer looked gorgeous from the neck-up with smooth locks and an absolutely stunning face of make-up. But from the bust down, the frock was a bust, with a thigh-skimming hemline that could make even Giuliana Rancic look chunky. We get that ‘mini dress’ means ‘short’, but… no.

Selena Gomez

Boyfriend Justin Bieber may have made a gosh-awful attempt at dressing like a grown-up in a Hugh Hefner-reminiscent black velvet get-up paired with high-top sneakers, but Selena cut a sophisticated figure in a shimmering gown by Giorgio Armani. The pale gold creation featured a plunging neckline that still managed to keep The Girls under wraps, a thigh-high slit, and plenty of elegant, waterfall-like draping. The “Who Says” crooner kept the color palate simple with matching heels, clutch and earrings, and finished her look with hair that screamed of Old Hollywood Glam. Justin, please try to look as nice as your girlfriend next go-round.

Heidi Klum

What do the words doily, paper snowflakes and quicksilver have in common? Ding! They can all be used to describe our gut reaction to the supermodel’s AMA outfit. Heidi’s smooth silver dress featured plenty of stencil-like cut-outs on the bodice that showed off her bod –and what may well have been some iteration of underpants– underneath. But while the frock scores points for ingenuity, Heidi loses points for messy hair and too-dark eye make-up.

Julie Bowen

The “Modern Family” star’s dress may have looked like little more than a sparkly striped holiday sweater given a higher calling, but Julie worked it. Featuring wide bands of glittering shades from black to tan, the comparatively informal frock was paired with informal hair in the form of a messy –but still holiday elegant– updo. The one issue we have? The get-up managed to make the slim star look super duper slim, which will likely fuel the ongoing Julie Weight Debate. Yippee.

Adam Lambert

Just call him Glambert. The “American Idol” runner-up, who donned a sparkling three-piece suit and black coat, looked super-slick in a vintage David Bowie kind of way. Granted the pants were, ahem, maybe a little too tight, and the hair maybe a tad bit too big, but big points for at least attempting to step it up a notch for an awards show.
