A review of the HTC EVO 3-D phone

The HTC EVO 3-D is one of the newest phones on the HTC line from Sprint. The EVO 3-D is a phone designed for entertainment and social networking. The EVO 3-D comes with the android market preinstalled as well as several HTC exclusive widgets and applications

The High Points

The EVO 3-D has fast internet loading times when connected to the 4G network. The screen comes with a full color display with separately customizable lock screen and seven separately customizable home screens. Each of the screens are able to be customized with widgets, applications and internet short cuts. The lock screen background and home screen backgrounds are able to be separately customized with any of the several HTC still and live backgrounds, as well as a photo of your choice taken from your phone.

The EVO 3-D is light weight, only weighing in at 6.0 oz. It has a 4.3 in full color high definition display. It also houses a 2-D/3-D camera with flash and six customizations in 3-D and thirteen in 2-D. The HTC exclusive widget ‘FriendStream’ is a quick, fun, and interactive way to keep you in touch with your Facebook and Twitter friends.

The Lows

The biggest and most noticeable failure of the EVO 3-D is the battery life. The sprint website claims a six hour continuous talk time. While this may be true of just talk time, if you are using the EVO 3-D for social networking or actively streaming instant messengers and being connected with Facebook, the battery life is significantly reduced. On average, I have gotten between 2 and 3 hours of use out of the phone when not using a battery saving application.

Another problem is the actual 3-D camera. The 3-D pictures are hard to view and can only be viewed in true 3-D if you hold the phone in a specific position. The camera must be held at a horizontal orientation in order to take any kind of 3-D pictures. The effects in 3-D are not very clear and the quality of the 3-D to 2-D conversion is poor.

The phone also has a tendency to run extremely hot to the touch, especially when the battery is in high demand by connectivity. The when the phone is running hot like that the heat sensitive touch screen becomes difficult to use. The phone also runs warm when you are using the phone and it can be very uncomfortable to hold to your ear.

Overall, I would rate the HTC EVO 3-D a three out of five. I believe that if HTC would invest in an extended life battery, and work to perfect the 3-D technology it would be worth the price. The HTC EVO 3-D is currently priced at one hundred dollars more than the basic HTC EVO 4G. With the only difference between the two being the 3-D camera I do not believe that it should be your phone of choice unless you plan to make a lot of use of the 3-D technology.
