2011 Miss Universe Pageant: Angola’s Leila Lopes Wins

Set in the largest city in Brazil, Sao Paulo, the 60th Annual Miss Universe Pageant visited for the first time the country known for its samba dance and the traditional Carnival. During the swimsuit and evening gown competitions dancers and musical guests were popular Brazilian artists. However, it was hosted throughout by Andy Cohen and Natalie Morales. Some of the judges were Brazilian such as Indy 500 winner, Helio Castroneves, and supermodel, Isabeli Fontana.

Instead of the 89 contestants from all corners of the globe parading in their national costumes they wore standard pageant gowns. Ximena Navarrete, 2010 Miss Universe, introduced the ten best costumes. Miss Panama won Best Costume. After the introductions of all contestants it would be whittled down to the Top 16. The 16th contestant was not chosen by the judges. You could vote for your fan favorite online, which was Miss Portugal. Miss USA, Alyssa Campanella, was amongst those chosen for the swimsuit round.

The evening gown competition brought it down to the Top 10, which did not include Miss USA. The hometown crowd was thrilled to see Miss Brazil make it. Other crowd favorites were Miss Philippines and Miss Angola. Some of these gowns were stunning while others missed the mark. Miss China and Miss Costa Rica had beautiful red dresses. The Top 5 were then chosen: Miss Brazil, Miss Angola, Miss Ukraine, Miss Philippines and Miss China. It would be the Final Question that would decide their fates.

Miss China and Miss Philippines gave good answers, but the other contestants were much stronger. In the end it was Miss China as 4th Runner-Up, Miss Philippines 3rd Runner-Up, Miss Brazil 2nd Runner-Up, Miss Ukraine 1st Runner-Up and Miss Angola, Leila Lopes, as the 2011 Miss Universe. Ms. Lopes is the first Miss Universe to win from Angola.
