What’s Happened to Mitt Romney?

At the onset of his candidacy, he seemed a sure shoo-in for the Republican nomination, and don’t get me wrong, he may nab it yet, but Mitt Romney’s seemingly impenetrable armor is beginning to show some chinks, and he only has one person to blame. No, it’s not Newt Gingrich. Rick Perry? Forget about it. Romney has withstood, in some way or another, just about every attack that has been cast his way, only to risk having it all crumble because of, well, himself.

To be fair, according to rasmussenreports.com, Romney currently leads the Iowa Caucus with 25% of the vote, just ahead of Ron Paul and Newt Gingrich.

However, Romney will have to seriously evaluate several key factors if he wants to stand a chance of winning the Republican nomination.

For starters, he seems like the candidate that moderate and undecided Republican voters initially side with until his opponents are given more screen time, usually during a debate. As we recently witnessed, it doesn’t take much more than a simple phrase like “9-9-9″ to capture voters’ interests.

Strangely enough, it seems like people just haven’t warmed up to Mitt Romney. Could it be due to his Mormon beliefs? Contenderministries.org has a list of fundamental differences between mainstream Christianity and Mormonsim for those who aren’t familiar. I imagine that certain doctrinal differences could cause a problem with the very conservatives Romney seeks to woo.

Or, perhaps, it isn’t that. It may simply be that fact that, try as he might, Romney can often come across as inanimate, out of touch, and a tad too greasy. Take, for instance, his ill-placed $10,000 bet. Brief, but glaring gaffes such as this only give his opponents cheap points.

But, barring a major scandal, Romney’s sure to get the nomination. I mean, what else can I say? The guy’s been racking up endorsements faster than anybody.

What about you? Would you like to see Romney in the White House, or do you think there’s more to him than meets the eye?
