“We Are the 53%” Only Proves Occupy Wall Street’s Point

COMMENTARY | Just when you thought there couldn’t be any more drama surrounding “Occupy Wall Street”, a spinoff of the “Occupy” movement has created their own stir with a blog and twitter trend claiming, “We are the 53%.” Their foundation is built on the belief that “Occupy” protestors are homeless, unemployed and just trying to reach into the pockets of those who work hard. “We are the 53%” has announced they do not make up part of the 99 percent as “Occupy” suggests and that they are hard-working taxpayers.

This enraged group of people who have resorted to writing how hard working they are on a piece of paper then posting it on a blog for the world to see is operating under the assumption that the “Occupy” protestors are without shelter or jobless. While some may be, many protestors are wage-earning, tax-paying, middle class citizens who are protesting the corruption on Wall Street and in the government.

After reading through the many hand-written letters that are laced with exhaustion and anger, it seems this “53%” is very unsympathetic to the “Occupy Wall Street” protestors and cause. The submissions claim they have worked since they were of age and have either struggled to pay bills or have fought harder than most to get ahead. While I commend their work ethic, they seem to be proving the point “Occupy Wall Street” is trying to make. “Occupy” protestors are saying some are hard-working, middle-class citizens that are tired of working incredibly hard only to have the majority of the money going in the 1 percent’s pocket. The majority of the “We are the 53%” submissions discuss how they are working overtime to barely survive. Wake up “53%”! You are struggling because the 1 percent you work for is unfairly finding ways to profit from your work whether through healthcare fraud, cheap wages, or corrupt practices throughout Wall Street and government. These protestors are fighting to help your hard-working souls get what you are worth instead of Corporate America paying their executives millions for work the blue collar employee’s have done.

Maybe “We are the 53%” are unaware of how much top government officials make and that Congress has the option to increase their own salaries regardless of performance, or how bailout money has been used inappropriately.
