If you are retired, unemployed, or just have some extra time on your hands, there is opportunity for you to assist the community by volunteering. What are some places that might need an extra hand?
The skills, that once were used in your working environment, might be very useful to the volunteer community. For instance, if you had clerical skills, your help is needed in several places. The local Pine Street Clinic needs a receptionist to assist with the check in of low income patients. This free clinic serves many low income patients with dental and medical services. If you are a nurse or medically trained, your services here might be needed, also.
If you are a retired teacher, the local schools welcome your help in tutoring students. The Boys and Girls Club offers its members after school help with homework. You can call the club in your area to volunteeer.
If you love children, you can volunteer for the Grandparent program. This program pairs someone up with a student. You interact with the student at school, assisting them with school work, home work, etc. You become their mentor. This program works well with the elderly and young student. Check with a school, located near you, to see what the requirements are to enter this program.
If you like to assist people, the hospital is always looking for volunteers. Conway Regional Hospital has a program, where volunteers deliver mail, flowers, and assist patients in getting to their appointments. Some work at the gift shop, reception desk, and other areas in the hospital.
The need for volunteers to sort clothing and donated items at the Salvation Army is great. Workers price and sort items for resale in the local shop.
If you like to cook or serve others, the Soul Food Cafe is looking for volunteers. There are many opportunities to work there. You can assist with cooking, serving, or even clean up. Contact the Cafe for additional information.
Volunteers are needed at Hospice, also. This organization needs people to work in the office, scheduling, etc. They, also, can use people to visit their clients for a friendly visit from time to time.
There are many other organizations that serve the community that need volunteers. Habitat for Humanity is a very active organization in Conway. They are in need of people to not only build houses, but others to teach the homeowner the basics of home ownership.
