VMA 2011: Full Recap of 2011 Video Music Awards (PHOTOS)

Lady Gaga surprised fans by putting on a drag act to open the 2011 VMAs, which were held at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles on August 28. Appearing as Jo Calderone, her beloved male alter ego, Gaga took the stage for a dramatic monologue and rousing rendition of ‘You and I’ wearing what was, technically speaking, one of the most normal outfits she has ever performed in. An ensemble of black slacks, a black sportscoat and a loose white tee shirt was topped off with a pompadour and a cigarette.

Besides Lady Gaga, 2011 VMA performances included songs by Adele, Kanye West and Jay-Z, Pitbull, Chris Brown, Young the Giant, Beyonce and others. However, one of these artists managed to steal the show before the show even started! As MTV announced right before the 2011 VMAs began, it turns out singer Beyonce is pregnant !

VMA 2011 Recap: Photos, Fashion and More!

The VMA 2011 black carpet was awash with fashion faux-pas. However, at a ceremony as quirky and relatively informal as the MTV Video Music Awards, that is to be not only expected, but embraced. The Oscars this ain’t. Chek out some amazeballs 2011 VMAs fashion photos right here, including a shot of Nicki Minaj looking like she rolled in glue and then jumped in one of those machines where you try to snag toys and stuffed animals with a metal claw.

Besides some odd fashion, great performances and the news that Beyonce is preggers, there were obviously some awards handed out! You can find a rundown of 2011 VMA winners here. For a quick tease, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga won big; Perry for “E.T.” and “Firework” and Gaga for her “Born This Way” video.

Justin Bieber beat out his older and far more sophisticated competition to take home a Moonman for Best Male Artist. Britney Spears was honored with a 2011 VMAs dance tribute highlighting her music video successes, and awarded the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. (Remember, full winner’s list at link above!)
