Garvan Woodland Gardens, located in Hot Springs, Arkansas, is a treat to tour anytime of the year. The well tended gardens offer more than flowers and shrubs. There are classes held here to meet the needs of every gardener.
No matter what season you visit the gardens, you will find something blooming. Even when the hot days of summer are over, and most flowers have faded, there are flowers beginning to bloom in the gardens.
The well maintained gardens boast of many individually designed garden areas. For instance, the Japanese inspired garden, features Japanese Maples and tree peonies to complement the bulbs and shrubs located there.
In order to fully appreciate the gardens, you must consider the history of the gardens. Once clear cut by a timber company, the owner of the gardens, Verna Cook Garvan, decided to never allow this land to be cut that way. In 1920, she purchased the land. She made it her goal for 40 years to plant hundreds of shrubs, roses, and 160 different types of azaleas on the 210 acre plot near Lake Hamilton.
Upon her death, she deeded the gardens to the University of Arkansas Foundation, a non profit group, which maintains the gardens.
In any given season, you can appreciate the blooms of the garden. Even in the Fall, when all of the summer blooms are spent, the gardens come alive with fall periennals. The asters, roses, sage, and other fall flowers grace the garden.
The garden requires a great deal of walking to view it all, however, there are carts available for visitors who cannot walk the entire garden. There are many paths lined with flowers, which makes the walk in the gardens very enjoyable. There are lakes and ponds scattered throughout the area, so even on a hot, steamy day, the gardens stay cool.
The flowers are not the only stars in the gardens. There are art exhibits held throughout the year, where local and nationally known artists display their works. The gardens are a back drop for cooking classes, and gardening seminars, also.
In December, the gardens are turned into a Winter Wonderland. The lights are hung from every tree, bush, and various scenes are strategically placed in the gardens, for all to enjoy.
The Anthony Chapel, located on the grounds, is often used for wedding ceremonies. The picturesque location is used for many bridal photographs.
