Vintage Apothecary Towels

So many people love antiques because they recall a time when things were simpler; a time when the world was more peaceful and loveable. The antique doesn’t have to be a piece of furniture, dishes, or a portrait, though. It can be something as unsophisticated as an apothecary label. You know, a label from an old drugstore item, like rubbing alcohol, or a popular elixir of the day. Those labels aren’t easy to find but, even if you don’t have any, you can still make apothecary towels. They’re so unusual and intriguing that you’ll simply love displaying them in the kitchen or bathroom.

Some people save and collect apothecary labels from old jars, bottles, and things, but others have none. For those who have no labels you can download and print some online to make new towels look like vintage towels. Besides the labels you’ll need inkjet-printable, cotton sheets. You can find them online but you’ll have a hard time finding the inkjet-printable sheets locally. Print or download the apothecary labels of choice and print them onto the cotton sheet.

If you want, make the labels look older by roughing up the edges, making a tiny tear here and there, or by even dipping them in tea. If you get them wet, allow them to dry before using for this craft. Peel off the backing from one of the labels and position it on the chosen towel or other object. Sew around the perimeter of the tag to attach it to nearly any cloth item. Sew the label onto a corner of the towel or right across the front to give it a vintage look.

Some hand towels have a ribbed area, near the two short ends, and those give you an option of making a whole banner across the towel. Sew several labels together, end-to-end, then sew the whole strip to the recessed area on the towel, from one long side, to the other.

Besides hand towels, you can sew the apothecary labels onto tea towels, place mats, an apron, and many other cloth items. But don’t stop there. You can make apothecary labels to put on old jars and bottles, soap dishes, lampshades and other objects to give them an antique look.

The apothecary labels look so interesting and there are many different ones you can find when you look online. Print out lots of them because you’re going to love crafting with them. The crafts you make will not only look good in your own home but they make fabulous gifts for friends and family.
