Turn the Thread in Your Sewing Room into Artwork & Wall Decor

Are you a sewing maven or crafter? Then you probably have many spools of thread that need organization. Take heart. You can actually turn those spools into artwork or wall decor. Let me show you how.

• Multi-Colored Heart

There’s a fantastic picture on the PaperSparrow’s Flickr photostream entitled, Spools. It’s a charming photo of all different shapes, sizes and colors of thread randomly hung on the wall with simple nails in a heart-shaped pattern. Create one, two or three hearts for the wall in your sewing or craft room – depending on how much thread you need to organize. It’s a brilliant solution for keeping your spools out in the open where you can see them.

• Flower Garden

If you’re not into heart shapes, you can create artwork with your thread spools by making a long, continuous flower garden on your wall. Keep the earthy browns and tans on the bottom and use green colored spools of thread for the stems and leaves of your flowers. Then create flower heads based on the colors you want to group. Make a flower head with all your pink thread together, or group your blues for another flower head – and so on. Not only will you have a whimsical piece of art for your wall, your thread will be organized by color.

• Monograms or Words

Keep going with your thread spool art. Create monograms of two of three initials or spell out entire words on the wall. Just use a pencil to lightly define the shapes of the letters you need on the wall, then place the spools along the lines of the letters to complete your project. It’s that easy.

• Wall Border

If you want a quick solution to your thread storage problem, create a long wall border on one wall of your room with your collection of spools. You can even incorporate other craft tools in between the spools, like scissors or rulers if you want to get more creative. Have fun with it and add whatever you have lying around your craft room.

If you’re worried about what the wall will look like when you remove a spool, don’t be. You can simply draw a little circle on the wall where the thread would hang and paint it with color so the design remains even when you remove your spools. Your thread art will look terrific no matter how many spools you have at any given time. It’s a brilliant idea for displaying and organizing your supplies in an inventive fashion.
