Tsugane Otoshi Waterfalls of Japan, a Hidden Gem for the Family

Recently my family and I were looking for some fun and local things to do without breaking the bank to do it. A friend of ours suggested that we check out the Tsugane waterfalls near Sasebo and so we did. There are many waterfalls in our area but this one is pretty secluded and not so easy to find, but once we did, it was well worth the hunt.

With the Yen rate being the way it is in comparison to the American dollar is it so easy to spend an arm and a leg in one day. This trip proved that we can have a blast while only spending for the gas in the tank. So if you live near Sasebo Japan and you are looking for a quick days get away, this is for you.

The falls are wonderful; they are just powerful enough to create a fine mist but weak enough for you to stand under. My kids and I got completely submerged in it and had a took turns jumping in and out. Just below the waterfalls are small pools of water to play in, but do be careful the rocks can be slippery. The best part is because it is secluded there are never a lot of people there and so it’s never crowded.

I would suggest taking along with you an extra change of clothing, and maybe pack some sandwiches and snacks to eat. There is nothing to sit on but the damp rocks so you may want to take something to like a lawn chair or plastic tarp just to keep dry. So pack up the car, make some sandwiches and prepare to have you mind blown but one of the hidden gems of Japan.

Directions: From Sasebo you’ll want to find your way to hwy 202 South toward Nagasaki and go all the way to the small town of Oseto. Oseto is near the Ocean and so you’ll be driving right along the ocean side to get there. Just as you are leaving Oseto you will cross a small concrete flat bridge, watch closely 5-10 meters past the bridge there is a sign in English pointing to the waterfalls (turn left here). You will go down a narrow street that will soon open up to sort of a fork in the road, follow the sign again and turn left. That is the last left you will take from here on you will either keep straight or bare right all the way to the falls. Don’t worry about it; just read the signs all the way and you will not get lost. The road will come to an end and you will have to park, walk across the bridge along a small path and the waterfalls will be right in front of you.
