Tree Stump Toadstool

This fall, while you’re putting hay bales around the yard, and pumpkins or gourds on the porch, take the decorating a little further. This year, make toadstools which blend right in with the decorations while offering visitors a stool on which to sit. The toadstools look adorable and, even though they’ll go great with pumpkins and such, they can be used all year long.

Cut a tree stump to make the stool. The stump can vary in size but 10″ high is a nice size. The bottom and the top of the stump should be flat and straight. If there are limbs which protrude from the stump simply cut these off, close to the stump. In addition to the stump, cut a circle of wood which is slightly larger around than the top of the stump.

Cut a piece of dense, thick foam to make the top of the toadstool. Cut a circle to be slightly larger around than the plywood circle. Then, take an electric knife and cut away pieces of foam from one side to form a dome. Glue the flat side of the foam to the wood circle.

Cut poly-fil to be a much larger circle than the wood – six inches larger, all the way around. Place this over the foam, pull it tightly under the wood circle, and staple in place. Cut off excess poly-fil.

Cut a large, red circle of felt. Cut additional, small circles of tan felt – in various sizes. Stitch these onto the red felt or use fabric glue to affix them. Lay the red felt over the dome and staple it to the bottom of the wood. Cut off excess felt.

Use a drill to attach the domed piece to the tree stump. Set the finished toadstool out on a porch or use it indoors, in a child’s room, or beside the fireplace.

There are variations you can do to create the toadstools you want. Use tan felt with dark brown spots, yellow felt with green spots, or combine other colors. Or, make the toadstool spots from small-diameter roping to create more texture than with felt. If you want, you can even paint the stump. If you’ll be using the toadstools inside the house glue a piece of felt to the bottoms so floors won’t be scratched. The little stools look so cute and are perfect for fall decorating or for creating a woodsy atmosphere in a child’s room.
