Traveling to London? Get Everything You Came For…And More

On a recent trip to London, I found the city to be vibrant, rich in history, loaded with culture and full of charm. I wanted to visit some of the city’s historical gems – The Tower of London, Westminster Abbey and Buckingham Palace – as well as to soak up culture in the West End theatre district, and then have some time left over for shopping as well as sampling fish and chips and a pint or two at some of the countless pubs across London.

Perhaps the best thing I did was to take one of the hop-on, hop-off double-decker bus tours on my first full day in London. These buses run throughout the day and allowed me to get off and take a look around Trafalgar Square, get back on another bus (they run every fifteen minutes along the same route), stop to get a bite to eat near Piccadilly Circus, then re-board so I could be sure to see Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. The bus ride helped me decide upon sites and areas that I wanted to explore further during the remainder of my visit.

Aside from walking, taxis and buses, I took advantage of London’s Tube, its clean, safe and efficient underground transit system. I used the tube to get me to the neighborhood I desired to see and then walked or took a cab once there.

London is comprised of many distinct neighborhoods, each offering me unique opportunities. Given the size of London, I planned each day to take in the sites of one or two neighborhoods. One day I visited Buckingham Palace and the exquisite Harrods department store; another day I spent time in Soho and the West End, checking out the trendy stores and ethnic restaurants before taking in a matinee of a theatre production. The next day I visited the Tower of London, which houses the Royal Jewels, then ventured across the Thames River and saw the Tate Modern Museum, Shakespeare’s Globe and experienced the breathtaking views provided by the London Eye, a Ferris wheel providing passengers a bird’s eye view of the historic landmarks I had seen while touring, as well as the overall size of the Greater London.

Overall, my one-week journey was an opportunity of a lifetime, providing me with fond memories to cherish, as well as stories to share with friends and family.
