Tina Fey Captures Reader with Witty, Informative Memoir, Bossypants

This spring, I was presented with a gift card to Barnes and Noble. Topping the ‘Top 10 Best Sellers’ list was Tina Fey’s book, Bossypants. I thought to myself, “hmm, I liked Mean Girls, I liked her in Date Night…let’s give this a try.” And with that, I pressed “Buy” on my Nook.

Upon the virtual delivery, I immediately began reading. From the first page, I was hooked. Fey wrote her memoir with the same techniques and humor found in her shows. She starts with her early life, detailing her teenage years working with a small theater troupe and works her way chronologically to her booming success on Saturday Night Live and 30 Rock.

What impressed me the most was that instead of writing purely for laughs, like many comedians’ memoirs, Fey incorporated a lot of excellent advice for people interested in management and writing. Her anecdotes were witty and sarcastic while still being relevant to the text. Rather than bragging about her success, the author explained how she got there and how she handles her copious amount of responsibility both at home and at work. Ms. Fey has an entire chapter devoted to her flaws which demonstrates her humanity. This was a celebrity memoir unlike any other.

I enjoyed that the book was a light read, yet was still entertaining. I found myself laughing out loud on more than one occasion. I managed to finish the book in two sittings, a rare feat for me. I would definitely recommend Bossypants to anyone who enjoys an informative read chock full of humor.
