The West Sayville Dog Park in New York

Tucked away in quiet corner of West Sayville is the newest dog park on Suffolk County’s western south shore. The West Sayville Dog Park opened on August 4, 2011 to great fanfare among the area’s dog enthusiasts. It is a welcome refuge open to all dogs, big and small, with lots of room to run and play.

On June 7, 2007, then-Suffolk County Executive, Steve Levy, signed a bill to create 5 new dog parks in the county. At the time, only 3 existed and there were many residents eager to have more created.

1.5 acres of land adjacent to the Cherry Avenue soccer fields was cleared away and along with the Town of Islip Department of Parks and Recreation, Legislator William Lindsay officially opened the park last summer.

The park is split into two enclosed sections, one for dogs under 25 lbs and one for larger dogs. Both sections have running water and double gates to prevent runaway pets. The town opened 30 parking spaces for the facility which shares its parking with the neighboring soccer fields. The town does not offer garbage pick-up so the trash policy is “carry-in, carry-out”.

I recently stopped by to speak with some dog owners on an oddly warm winter’s day. Steve, who was there with his yellow Labrador, Sparky, had this to say, “We love this park. It’s still a quiet neighborhood park, but this area was really in need of somewhere for the dogs to run off-leash. We’re here every weekend.” Suzanne, enjoying an outing with her rescue dog, Trixie, said, “The people and dogs that come here are great, it’s so much fun to let my dog socialize and run and then go home and fall asleep for hours.”

The town posted their rules of behavior on the fence for the owners to read, and as long as the patrons, both four legged and two legged, abide by these rules, this should be a loud, furry and happy place for all.
