The Molja Lighthouse, Norway

So how many of us as a kid thought it would be the coolest thing to be able to live in a lighthouse and get to hang out watching the boats and listening to the waves all day? OK, so maybe listening to the waves all day may make some of us crazy, but what about staying overnight in a totally decked out lighthouse located at the entrance to the harbor of Aalesund in Norway.

The Molja Lighthouse is now part of Hotel Brosundet and is known as “room 47″ as the other 46 rooms are located in the actual hotel back on dry land. The lighthouse is located at the end of a 100 meter long sea wall that offers complete solitude and impressive views along with an invigorating sea spray. More along the lines of a romantic destination for those who want to be alone and pretend that the rest of the world does not exist.

The lighthouse itself is approximately 150 years old and you are not expected to want to rough it like they did back in the day, the inside has been totally re-vamped into a more shabby chic with the bedroom being on the top floor with the impressive bathroom taking up the bottom level. The idea was to contemporize the facilities inside the lighthouse while not disturbing the feel of a lighthouse. The famous architects of Snohetta, who also did the 9/11 museum in New York, were the ones behind this clever design that lets you, at least temporarily believe that you are all alone in the world.

At breakfast you can order room service to be brought down from the main hotel, the town itself offers many more restaurants if you want to explore the area. There are so many things that you can explore and do in Aalesund as the area has it all, mountains, water, islands, fjords and let’s not forget that stunning coastline. There are many museums available to explore and the architecture in town is in itself amazing with its many turrets, gables and gargoyles. There is something for everyone in this beautiful seaside town.
