The Homeless Woman’s Can

She stands alone in the middle of the street.

I can see in her eyes she wishes for something to eat.

Hunger stares at her feet.

Tonight she may face defeat.

I hold expensive presents within my hand.

She looks at me and does not understand.

How can expensive gifts truly be grand?

Out here all she has is hope in an empty can.

I walk back into the store.

I walk through the door.

I have learned my lesson I am sure.

Less truly is more.

The money is returned to me.

I buy less expensive gifts from the Dollar Tree.

From the window she watches me

As I receive extra green.

I put the money into her can.

With a smile I give her my hand.

I tell her karma is grand.

She still does not understand.
