The Graveyard Angel

At night the fog drifts over the headstones of those who have passed on. Beautiful statues watch over the lost souls of the newly buried.

In one cemetery, one statue in particular, had been there since the first person in the graveyard was laid to rest in the old cemetery.

The first person buried there was a young girl named Rose, she passed away when she was only 15 from complications of an illness. Her family had loved her dearly, and she had loved them. At her funeral, she was happy to see, her family was laughing and remember all the happiness she had brought them instead of crying because she was gone. She still felt alone, but she didn’t want to move on yet. Soon, the statue was erected, and it was in her likeness. She loved it, it looked like her as an angel.

A few days later, another person was buried. Rose watched as the wondering soul of an old man looked around the cemetery. Rose ran up to the man.

“Hello, Sir! Don’t worry, I don’t bite. My name is Rose.” She said as she stopped in front of him. He smiled a very warm and loving smile.

“Hello, Rose. My name is William. It’s nice to meet you.” He spoke in a quiet and caring voice.

William had been worried, he wasn’t too sure of his surroundings, but for some reason, the spirit of this young girl comforted him greatly.

“You know, it’s easy to move on, William. I can help you if you like.” Rose said with a smile.

“If it’s easy, why haven’t you done it yet?” William was curious.

“I don’t really know. But I feel like I have more to do here.” Rose said, as happy as could be.

She took William’s hand and led him to the cemetery gates.

“There you go. Just walk past these, and you will be at peace.” Rose let go of William’s hand and smiled again. William leaned down and gave her a gentle kiss on the forehead.

“Thank you, little angel.” He said right before he walked past the gates.

Weeks went by, followed by months and years. Rose did the same thing for every soul that appeared. She also would touch the shoulders of people mourning lost ones, always filling them with feelings of hope and love. She was enjoying event moment of her afterlife, it felt right for her.

One day, a young soul appeared, no older than 7. He was sitting on a gravestone, throwing rocks. Every time Rose would try to approach him, he would run and hide. She tried for days to help the boy, but he wasn’t having it. He was too shy and scared to talk to her.

A week after the boy showed up, Rose finally had a plan. She sat near her statue with her legs crossed. She started making all kinds of noise. She crashed two rocks together and made sounds like tires squealing and cars crashing. It only took two minutes before the little boys was behind her. He was trying to see what she had.

“Hey! Let me see!” The boy yelled. Rose turned to him and smiled. She showed him her rocks. He laughed.

“Those aren’t good cars. Come over here. I have better ones.” He said as he took her hand and led he to his pile of rocks. She laughed with him.

“My name is Rose. What’s yours?” Rose asked.

“My name is Andrew.” He looked down. “I think I’m lost.”

“You’re not lost, Andrew. You just need to walk through those gates over there. And everything will be alright.” She smiled as he seemed to be comforted. His eyes grew wide.

“I knew you were an angel!!!!” He exclaimed. Almost scaring Rose. She looked confused then smiled.

“I’m not an angel. I’m just here to help.” She said, happy about the boys thoughts.

“Yes you are! As soon as you said everything would be alright. I could see your beautiful wings and halo.” As he spoke, she realized what he said was true. She was an angel, she had been this whole time. This was her purpose and she would never be alone.
