The Grammys: Foo Fighters Get Their Due After 18 Years and Adele Sweeps Six Awards as Predicted

The 2012 Grammy winners were pretty much predicted for weeks now. As expected, British singer Adele took home the Best Album award for 21. Other big winners were the Foo Fighters, taking away four statues in the Rock category and another four went to Kanye West in the Rap category. Best New Artist was Bon Iver who won in the Alternative album category as well for his self-titled, Bon Iver.

Adele grabbed Grammys in six categories, starting with the night’s first award for Best Pop Vocal. The 24-year-old singer, who barely had time to warm her seat as she was constantly making it up to the stage to accept her trophies, thanked doctors for saving her voice. She recently had vocal chord surgery that obviously proved successful. She sang her hit song “Rolling In the Deep” beautifully and strong which proved her instrument, her voice, was back to being finely tuned.

The Foo Fighter’s Dave Grohl said that “White Limo,” which won for Best Rock Song, was the “kinda the coolest song we’ve ever written.” The song came of their Best Rock Album award-winning album, Wasting Light. The former Nirvana band member, who has led the Foo Fighters since their 1994 debut , said the band can sit back now and not have to worry about winning Grammy awards anymore. They seemed grateful for the five awards they won, but acted casually rockstar unaffected on camera.

The highly anticipated awards show was marred by the recent news of singer Whitney Houston’s sudden death the day before. Host LL Cool J started off the show with a prayer for Houston. Several celebrities paid tribute to the late singer, but it was Jennifer Hudson’s rendition of “I Will Always Love You” that brought tears to those in attendance and television views as well. The Dolly Parton song was made famous when Houston sung it as the title track for the movie in which she also starred with Kevin Costner, The Bodyguard.

Taylor Swift won two awards in the Country category. There were only two real surprises of the evening. Bon Iver winning over Nicki Minaj for Best New Artist was the first. The most unexpected of all Grammy winners was Chris Brown for Best R&B Album F.A.M.E. In fact, after his legal problems involving domestic abuse issues with ex-girlfriend, singer Rhianna , viewers and critics were surprised that the Grammy producers let him perform during the show as well.
