The Best Venue for Dinner and a Play in Boulder, Colorado: The Boulder Dinner Theater

For Christmas I received two tickets to the local dinner theater in Boulder, Colorado. I was delighted with this present since I have driven past this theater many times and was curious about it.

The Boulder Dinner Theatre is a local icon celebrating thirty-four years producing live theater. Phantom was the musical I had the pleasure of attending. This was not the Phantom of the Opera of Andrew Lloyd Webber fame, this Phantom closely followed the novel written by Gaston Leroux and adapted by Maury Yeston and Arthur Kopit.

The Boulder Dinner Theatre was such a wonderful treat because not only was I in the audience for a brilliant rendition of Phantom set in an intimate space but the dinner that was included was very tasty. The ticket included the play and dinner.

The cast members of the show, which I didn’t realize until intermission, served dinner. The menu for dinner was a choice between six featured entrees that included bread and a salad. Additional cost was for appetizers, an upgrade entrée, alcoholic beverage, and for dessert. Dessert was served during intermission and that’s when I realized the servers were the cast members still in costume. Dinner is two and half-hours before the show which is a flexibility that alleviates late stragglers.

The theater is arranged with table seating for 4 or 6, with the chance of sharing a table for parties less than 4. The theater also is small that there aren’t any bad seats in the house. The stage extends out in to the audience that the tables that are near the stage get a treat when the actors stroll close and seem to be included in the scene.

The Boulder Dinner Theatre is open year round and performances are seven days a week with matinees on Saturday and Sunday.

Make reservations in advance. Pricing varies with seating sections and the day of the week where weekends being more expensive. It was wonderful to break up the week by going on a Wednesday. I thoroughly enjoyed the musical and was amazed how professional it was, almost like going to the theater in New York City. The cast members have all performed around the country and many have received awards but have come back to the Boulder Dinner Theatre.

I would recommend to family and friends the Boulder Dinner Theatre and would go again to this wonderful venue.
