Tasty Brews in Eastern Oregon

It’s no secret that Oregon is home to craft brew enthusiasts. The Pacific Northwest nurtures the love of microbrews and all of the trappings that go with them.

Eastern Oregon is also jumping on that train. Small breweries are beginning to pop up throughout the region, providing tasty beers to locals. Along with their award-winning brews, they also cook up some of the tastiest food in the area, too. Two such places are The Prodigal Son Brewery and Pub and Barley Brown’s Brew Pub.

The Prodigal Son Brewery and Pub

The Prodigal Son is Pendleton, Oregon’s first craft brewery. The atmosphere is fun and funky. Large wall murals and interesting nick-knacks are everywhere. The vibe is quite a bit more hip than Eastern Oregon generally has, but at this pub, it works. It’s relaxing and inviting.

The food is amazing as well. Each dish has a clever and attention-grabbing name. Mainly the pub serves burgers and sandwiches. These range from the classic cheeseburger to one topped with bacon, ham, and a fried egg. The Prodigal Son also serves delicious pasta dishes, appetizers, and desserts. Everything is under $15, so it’s affordable as well. Keep your eye out for daily specials.

The beers are the most important part of any brewery, and The Prodigal Son delivers. They produce IPA, hefeweizen, porter, and more. Their brews are also intriguingly named. Who wouldn’t want to drink A Beer Named Sue?

The Prodigal Son Brewery and Pub is located at 230 SE Court Avenue in Pendleton, Oregon. Hours are Tuesday-Thursday, 11 am to 10 pm; Friday-Saturday, 11 am to 11 pm; and Sunday, 12 pm to 9 pm. Call 541-276-6090 for more information.

Barley Brown’s Brew Pub

Barley Brown’s is a long-time favorite of Eastern Oregonians. It’s located in Baker City, Oregon and was established in 1998. The restaurant is casual and relaxed. The entire place is crammed with tables, which is good, since it’s packed on the weekends. It’s not uncommon to wait in line for a bit.

Food at Barley Brown’s is delicious. They serve burgers and fish and chips, but patrons can also get a delicious steak. There’s also an entire section of the menu devoted to gourmet pasta dishes. One local favorite is the spicy chicken pasta, but I also really enjoy the Dijon chicken pasta. It’s full of artichokes and other tasty bits.

Brews at Barley Brown’s are second to none, and this is well-established by the numerous awards its won. They received dozens. In fact, they won the Gold Medal from the World Beer Cup for the Shredder’s Wheat, an American-style wheat beer. This is my husband’s favorite. He says it is by far one of the best beers he’s ever enjoyed.

Barley Brown’s is located at 2190 Main Street, Bakery City, Oregon. Hours are Monday-Saturday, 4 pm to 10 pm. Call 541-523-4266 for more information.
