Review of Johnsonville Pork & Chicken Bratwurst

A couple days ago, I dropped my wife off at the nail salon so she could use the gift certificate she got as a Christmas gift to get a manicure and pedicure before my company’s party. Since I had our youngest daughter with us and knew it would take her a couple hours, I decided to kill some time by catching up on our grocery shopping.

While walking through the meat section of the store, I decided to pick up some Johnsonville bratwurst. I originally intended to buy just a regular package of them. But, when I saw the store was carrying their new Pork & Chicken variety , I decided to give them a try.

When I made this purchase, I honestly had some doubts about it. I decided to buy these particular brats because, according to the label, they had less fat than regular bratwurst. But, at the same time, I wasn’t really sure if I was going to sacrifice something in terms of taste. After all, I grew up in Wisconsin and, as a result of that, have been eating bratwurst all my life. It isn’t easy to add a different kind of meat to them and fool me into thinking they are the same as regular brats.

I ended up making these for dinner last night and, I have to admit, I was very impressed with them.

First of all, much like the package claims, these brats really do have less fat in them than regular brats. I know this because, in the winter (when I can’t use my grill), I usually will boil brats. When I do this, the fat in them will float to the surface of the pot. That was the case with the Pork & Chicken Bratwurst too. However, even though there was still some fat that floated to the top, it was roughly half as much as what I’m used to seeing. Since I’m trying to watch my weight and what I eat in general, that was something I liked seeing.

What really impressed me about this product though was the taste. These brats might have had chicken in them but, if I hadn’t seen the package, I honestly would have never known. All I could taste was the pork. In fact, other than the lack of fat, I didn’t notice any difference between these and regular Johnsonville brats.

I might have had my doubts about this product when I first bought it. But, after having it, I do think this will be something I will be buying more often. If you haven’t had a chance to try these brats, I recommend picking up a pack of them.
