Reducing Scarring from Acne at Home

Acne happens in adults and teens alike. Though the results of acne are different depending on the person, scars often form from severe cases of acne. Reducing scarring from the face and body is difficult, but not impossible. You can cut your chances of scarring as well as diminish signs of old scars by making a little extra effort in your skin care regimen.

Prevent Future Breakouts
Before you focus on the current acne scars, you need to first focus on preventing further breakouts and possible scars from appearing in the first place. Start a simple skin care regimen that involves washing your face daily, using an astringent toner and applying a grease-free moisturizer. Use acne touch up cream when breakouts occur. If your acne is severe, consult a dermatologist for prescription strength acne cleansers.

Protect Your Skin
If your skin is not protecting, reducing scarring is the least of your worries. Acne scars are more prominent when the overall skin is unhealthy. Therefore, drink at least 8-eight ounce glasses of water. Eliminate greasy and overly sugary foods from your diet and try to limit your caffeine intake. Apply sunscreen when you go out, even if you are just running errands — this will prevent your acne scars from darkening.

Reducing Current Scars
At least once per day, use a cotton swab to apply a dab of aloe vera, Vitamin E or sandalwood powder paste to your face. Let the solution sit for 15 to 30 minutes before washing it away. You can also set thin slices of cucumber or raw potato on your face to reduce swelling and irritation associated with acne scars.

Over-the-Counter Options
There are over-the-counter options you can use to reduce scars and save a visit to the doctor. A microdermabrasion kit such as Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion & Peel, $20.00, at Target can be used to relive the appearance of acne scars. Bleach creams are also available at your local store without a prescription, but these are not suitable for those suffering from sensitive skin or skin allergies.
