Product Review: Lush Cosmetics the Sacred Truth Fresh Face Mask

Oh my word. I love this mask, and that is my sacred truth.

I know I’ve blabbed to you and everyone else about the benefits of Lush Cosmetics’ fresh face masks, but I clearly didn’t know what I was talking about until I found The Sacred Truth. This pot of greenish goo is just about the coolest thing since sliced bread, and it’s a real miracle worker.

I’d been hooked on Catastrophe Cosmetic (you can read about it in my review archives) and had been using that mask for years, until I finally decided to try something different. Don’t get me wrong, I love Catastrophe Cosmetic, but it pretty much only helped my redness. It really didn’t help with my dryness in my cheeks or my oiliness in my T-zone. It also didn’t soften up my skin as much as I would like it to.

I went to Lush and asked one of the sales associates to help me with my skin dilemma. I wasn’t interested in trying a sample; Lush face masks are worth buying a whole pot, just to get the feel for a week or two’s worth of treatment. After all, Rome was not built in a day! (That’s really not a good analogy for getting better skin, but I’m fresh out of inspirational sayings for the day).

The sales associate was very informative. I asked her what I could use to combat my oily T-zone but stil hydrate the dry skin on my cheeks. She pointed me to The Sacred Truth, but gave me the overview. It’s meant for “mature” skin, but really, anyone of any age could use it. It has moisturizing avocado, papaya for softening, even fresh, organic, free range eggs! I remember reading old “beauty tips” on using egg whites for a facial mask.

I brought the tub of green goo home and tried it on my face. First I washed my make up off with 9 to 5 (the review for this cleanser is located in my review archives) and then I toned with Breath of Fresh Air. Then I opened this mask, fresh from the fridge, and spread it on my face. The mask was cold and felt wonderful on my skin. The smell was a little off-putting. I could smell the eggs and avocado in there and it made me a little queasy. I was hoping to get more of a fruity scent from the papaya but it wasn’t horrible enough that I couldn’t wear the mask.

I left the mask on for 10 mins for the first time I wore it. After rinsing off with warm water, my skin felt plump, hydrated, and oh so smooth. Not only that, the redness in my cheeks was gone! No flakes of skin were to be found anywhere. I think I found my holy grail of face masks. In subsequent uses, I’ve left the mask on for 30 – 45 mins, just to get the clay in the mask to suck out all the nasties from my skin. It didn’t irritate my face to leave it on for a longer time. Plus, I found it easier to remove the dried mask by sloughing it off my skin and then running a warm, wet washcloth over my face to remove the excess.

There are several other things I loved about this mask. The first is the ease of application. While I really did love Catastrophe Cosmetic, it was SO DIFFICULT to apply. It was dry and came off in chunks, even if I mixed it with water beforehand. The Sacret Truth applies like butter… or guacamole, if you will. It’s so smooth and creamy that it does not need extra water for ease of application. It glides right on.

Another thing I love about this mask is that I do not necessarily have to clean my face before I use it. This is especially true if I leave the mask on for a longer period of time. Your mileage may very though; since I have combination skin, my skin never really gets all that dirty. I might just be lucky.

The third thing I love about this mask is that I don’t need to wear face make up after using it! It completely calms and evens out my skin tone, so much so that I don’t need to wear any foundation the day after. I told you it was a miracle worker! The pores on my nose look smaller, too. Always a bonus.

The Sacred Truth is chock full of beneficial ingredients: Ginkgo Leaf and Brown Linseed Infusion, Kaolin, Talc, Honey, Fresh Papaya, Glycerine, Organic Yogurt, Fresh Free Range Eggs, Shea Butter, Evening Primrose Oil, Lanolin, Bentonite Gel, Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Ginseng Root Powder, Green Tea Powder, Fresh Wheatgrass, Bee Pollen, Ylang Ylang Oil, Rose Absolute, Lavender Oil, Rosewood Oil, Benzyl Salicylate, Geraniol, Benzyl Benzoate, Farnesol, Limonene, Linalool, Perfume.

As you can see, it’s full of edible, natural ingredients, but please do not eat this mask!

Because there’s lanolin, eggs, yogurt, honey and bee pollen in the mask, this mask is unsuitable for vegans.

This mask retails for $6.95 and lasts about 3 weeks in the fridge (although I’ve had masks last much longer than that). You can go to your local Lush and ask for a sample. I say just buy a pot, it’s fantastic!
