Photography in Winter Months: Winter Wonderland

We’ve all heard the song about “walking in a winter wonderland.” Every winter, I try to do just that and make sure I have my camera on hand and ready to go. Each season provides its own unique beauty and photographic inspiration, but there is just something extra special about the beauty of winter with its snow and ice and the way the light reflects off of it.

Most cameras have a special setting for taking photos in the snow. Try out this setting, and then take the same shot with a normal setting and see which one you prefer. In my own experiences, I’ve found it can go either way with which setting I prefer for a shot.

Take a walk around your own backyard, or visit a local park or nature trail to find interesting subject matter. Squirrels and birds are usually out and about gathering food and make great subjects for photos. Photograph your children playing in the snow and you’ll get some priceless shots. Do some close ups of the snow on the tree branches. Try interesting angles, and play with different camera settings. Shoot a few in black and white.

Many people feel winter is a blah and ugly season, but I choose to relish in its beauty. Sure, it can be cold and miserable at times, but it also provides a setting of unique, ethereal beauty not found in any other season. So grab that camera, bundle up and set out for a winter wonderland photographic adventure.
