Occupy Wall Street & Danny Meyer’s Union Square Cafe

So these Occupy Wall Street folks are moving uptown; apparently. There is this video which surfaced that shows these two gentleman from Occupy Wall Street raining on the parade of some fine wealthy folks enjoying a meal at Meyer’s Union Square Cafe.

Their beef was not with Meyer directly but more with Sotheby’s. Meyer sits on the board of Sotheby’s. Sotheby’s has allegedly “locked out” some of their workers. I don’t have all the facts on this and I don’t really care to find them out. I haven’t heard these claims disputed by anyone so I will just take these Occupy Wall Street guys at their word.

Okay. Sotheby’s is having some labor issues. So why would that embolden you to come into one of New York City’s best restaurants and tell the diners there about it? Union Square Cafe is where poeple come to dine and enjoy and it’s not a public park where you can just set up camp and do what you will. What sense does something like Occupy Union Square Cafe even make? Danny Meyer doesn’t do any of the hiring at Sotheby’s. Heck Danny Meyer doesn’t even do any of the hiring at Shake Shack. I worked there in its second season and I met Danny Meyer but that was after I was already hired. And it was only briefly that I met him; he’s a busy guy.

These two guys walk into his restaurant, order a beer (the one guy who does most of the talking is holding a half full glass of beer) and then the third good flips on the video camera and the Occupy Wall Street guy lays in on the dining public. Really? What good is this going to do but keep out scruffy looking, nerdy white guys (like me) from places like Union Square Cafe?

The YouTube link to the video says that “43 art handlers…are on the street” and that Meyer “is responsible.” I’m sorry but this is just another case of Occupy Wall Street overstepping their bounds and trying to cause a ruckus and force their message on an audience who would couldn’t care less. (And that chant indoors? Really?)
