2012 will be a great year for horror due to the release of some of the most anticipated horror movies in years. These are the movies that have been causing a buzz for months and are sure to cause horror fans to line up. Even though the superhero movies and action flicks of 2012 have gained headlines already, these upcoming horror movies of the year are pretty impressive.
Barnabas Collins Returns
When the announcement was first made about Johnny Depp playing Barnabas Collins in “Dark Shadows,” fans began to foam at the mouth with anticipation. Directed by Tim Burton, this big screen adaptation of the classic horror TV show will have opening nights which will sell out fast. It will draw fans of the show and fans of the Burton/Depp combination. It will be out on May 11, 2012.
Always Room for Aliens
Ridley Scott will introduce “Prometheus” on June 8, 2012. Fans of “Aliens” will camp out the night before. It is going to take place 30 years before the original movie and is the most anticipated prequel since we met Anakin Skywalker. As long as the aliens have nothing to do with midichlorians, I will be satisfied.
Emancipation Proclamation of the Undead
“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” will be hitting theaters on June 22, 2012. It is based on the book of the same name by Seth Grahame-Smith. Tim Burton produces this story, which looks at an alternate (and extreme) history. Instead of just freeing the slaves, this Lincoln also keeps the world safe from vampires.
Pitt’s Money Pit
Max Brooks’s book “World War Z” is being adapted by Brad Pitt. The movie has slipped from being the most anticipated horror movie of the year, since Pitt is not doing a direct adaptation. The original was a documentary-style story which saw the main character talking with people impacted by the past zombie apocalypse. Pitt is introducing his traditional zombie movie on December 21, 2012.
Honorable Mentions
I am sure you are wondering why I did not list “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2″ or “Hotel Transylvania.” While these two movies use vampires, werewolves, and other mainstays of horror, they are not going to be considered horror movies. “Twilight” movies are more romance and action, and “Hotel Transylvania” is going to be a children’s movie. “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” will be more along the lines of horror than the previous two mentioned here.
