It’s Fall! Time to Do Some Greening While Your Cleaning!

Having an eco-friendly lifestyle is a lot easier and more manageable these days. I wish I could say I do it selflessly for the greater good of the planet, but I have a long way to go.

However, with the cold weather coming and your getting ready for winter, the cleaning starts kicking in after the lazy days of summer. There isn’t a better way to make some changes and do some greening. Five is my lucky number and became a very manageable list for any household to change. These changes are small and easy to do and besides the financial rewards, it will create a healthier home and planet.

USE GREEN CLEANING PRODUCTS!

Now, I didn’t throw away all my cleaning products and buy green ones. I used up what I had and replaced my cleaners with greener options. First, there usually are many coupons available on line and in the papers, especially this time of year. Second, green cleaners don’t release harmful chemicals or toxins in the air. You will notice this more in small rooms like bathrooms. You’ll breathe easier, have fewer headaches and in many cases save money.

FIX THE DRAFTS!

It will be cold this winter and you remember which rooms you were grabbing for the blanket or extra sweater. Visit those rooms now before the cold weather comes back and plug the leak. The results will be a lower air conditioner and heating bill in the months to come. I use the plastic on all the windows and the new kits are a lot easier than they used to AND they make a huge difference.

WHEN CLEANING YOUR YARD AND PLANTING FOR NEXT SPRING-THINK BEFORE YOU PLANT!

Try to use more hearty plants that require less water or irrigation. Create and make a water collection area. By collecting water into this system when raining makes it easier and cheaper to water plants. I connected a tube to my gutters which fill barrels. By spring you will be all set as well as provide a way to get water away from the house. (Safety Alert: Make sure you have covers on your barrels, especially if you have small children)

UNPLUG APPLIANCES!

Nothing uses more energy than a plugged in appliance that is not being used. Many experts estimate as much as 40% of monthly utility bill is going towards powering home appliances that are turned off. You’ll be surprised how much it is-unplug it!

GO GREEN WITH REPAIRS BIG AND SMALL!

If you’re planning to paint, use a paint that has no or low VOC (volatile organic compound) paints. All major paint stores carry them now.

If you are changing shower heads, faucets or toilets-go low flow. The styles are beautiful and the pressure is a lot better than you think. This decision saves tons of water and money.

Major repairs? Shop for sustainable materials and ask where that wood comes from and use bamboo or cork-great choice and great for environment.

You will be surprised how quick these five little things can make a difference in your home and for the environment. I was amazed myself at my heating bill after a plugged all the drafts with caulking and putting the plastic over the windows. I couldn’t believe it!

Have fun and happy cleaning and greening!
