It is Business as Usual in College Football This Year

The college football season is under way. It was exciting to watch the game on the field again. College fans jammed college stadiums all over the country, and untold millions watched on television while they rooted for their favorite teams. With all the excitement about the opening of the football season, it is easy to forget the tumultuous offseason that college football has endured with several major programs on the verge of serious penalties for violation of NCAA rules, and there is even talk of the Miami Hurricanes receiving the death penalty. We saw coaches and athletic directors resign, and college presidents under great scrutiny. The powers to be in the NCAA promise to do a full review of the current rules, implement tougher penalties, and to reform college football.

However the NCAA talk about reforming college football is hot air. The fact is that nothing will change in college football, because it is big business. The NCAA operates on two levels. When it comes to player compensation all we hear is that these players are student athletes and amateurs, and should not receive compensation. However for the university and the college presidents college football is big business. The reality of college football is billion dollar tv contracts, pay per view packages, millions of dollars for bowl games, selling high price stadium tickets, concessions, and team memorabilia.

The whole system is geared to how much money can be made. Can we blame the players who accept a gift or cash when the whole system is geared toward making as much money as possible. With all of this money to be made there will be more cheating, breaking rules, and illegal activities. There is too much money for the NCAA to make any meaningful reforms The more money out there the more greed there will be to get more money. Enjoy watching the business of college football, and you can forget about any playoff format becasue the bowl games are giving out obscene amount of money. It will be business as usual.
