How to Make the Most of Your Volunteering

Giving is getting.
That’s how it seems to me! I volunteer in my community at the Boy Scout Troop my son is in and at the city I live in (mostly with the Scouts). You can volunteer too. It makes a difference in your community, the lives of people around you and it makes a difference in YOU.

Watching Eagles Soar
I am always so proud of the boys as they learn to lead. The life skills they absorb are important in today’s world. I have served as a committee member, newsletter editor, and Den Leader, watching as the little Tigers grew into Eagles. I can say I learned a lot. We provide help to the community in many ways. Service projects that the boys plan and execute earn them the Eagle Rank but each boy helps on all the projects. Learning to lead and to follow, how to best use the resources they have available or to find ways to raise funds or get materials donated from local businesses. Yes they camp and hike and sell popcorn but the real value in Scouting, is the boys become assets to whatever community they end up living in. They are prepared to lead, prepared and willing to help others, and able to face the future with the skills needed to succeed.
The Mission Statement of Scouting.
From the Scouting web site http://www.scouting.org : ” It is the mission of the Boy Scouts of America to serve others by helping to instill values in young people and in other ways prepare them to make ethical choices over their lifetime in achieving their full potential. The values we strive to instill are based on those found in the Boy Scout Oath.”

H I T Me
My volunteering experience at the City of Highland has been through the city’s HIT program. HIT is the Highland Improvement Team. It is run by Denise Garnsey and they have done many different projects over the years. HIT meets a couple times a month (weather permitting) to beautify and improve neighborhoods in the city. Sometimes it’s a park cleanup or an individual home, or graffiti clean up, or helping the city with various events. Visit the City web site to see many opportunities to volunteer and fill out a public service application. http://www.highland.ca.us/Volunteering or contact Denise Garnsey (909) 864-6861 ext 203
The Mission Statement for City of Highland
From the city web site: “Highland is dedicated to the betterment of the individual, the family, the neighborhood and the community. The City Council and the staff of the City of Highland are dedicated to providing the quality of public services that its citizens are willing to fund and will do so as efficiently as possible.”

If you feel the need to make a difference or just want to have some fun, call your city to find ways to volunteer or call your local Boy Scout Council. Helping a few boys or a neighbor you help all the many lives that are touched by them. Get involved, get moving, you know you want to!
