How to Decorate Bedroom Walls with Fabric and Fabric Starch

If you are looking to add color and personality to the walls of your bedroom but don’t want to deal with the hassle of painting, fabric offers the perfect solution. Fabric is extremely easy to attach to walls using fabric starch without causing damage, and will add a splash of color to a plain white wall. Fabric will dress up even the most boring bedroom and will transform your sleeping space into a room you love spending time in. Best of all, it is easy to remove fabric from walls without damaging the paint.

To decorate bedroom walls with fabric and fabric starch you will need:

Measuring tape
Cloth rag
Fabric starch
Paint pan or bowl
Sponge
Push pins
Fabric

1. Use the measuring tape to calculate the height and width of the wall you wish to cover in fabric. Multiple the height by the width to find the square footage of the wall. Write down the square footage. If you plan to cover more than one wall in your bedroom, repeat this step for each wall you plan to decorate with fabric.

2. Choose the fabric you want to cover the wall with. It is best to use lightweight fabric that will cling to the paint easily, such as cotton or gingham. Choose a color or pattern that you find visually pleasing and that matches the decor in your bedroom. Purchase enough fabric to cover the wall based on the square footage you calculated in step one.

3. Move all of the furniture to the center of the room so that you can access the walls easily.

4. Wipe the wall down with the cloth rag to remove any dirt or dust from the paint. Residue will make it hard for the fabric to cling to the wall properly, so it is essential the wall is clean before moving on to the next step.

5. Pour fabric starch into the bowl or paint pan.

6. Dip the sponge into the fabric starch and apply the starch to the top half of the wall in a thin, even coat.

7. Smooth the fabric across the top half of the wall. Run your hands firmly across the wall to smooth out any wrinkles or creases. The edges of the fabric should match up evenly with the edges of the wall. Apply a few push pins along the edges and corners to keep the fabric firmly secured to the wall until the fabric starch dries.

8. Dip the sponge into the fabric starch and apply the starch to the bottom half of the wall in a thin, even coat.

9. Smooth the fabric across the bottom half of the wall. Run your hands firmly across the wall to smooth out any wrinkles or creases in the fabric. The edges of the fabric need to match up evenly with the edges of the wall. Apply a few push pins along the edges and corners to keep the fabric firmly secured to the wall until the fabric starch dries.

10. Remove the push pins once the fabric starch has had time to dry. Your wall should now be completely covered with beautiful fabric that resembles wall paper.

If you get bored with the fabric or need to move, you can easily remove the fabric from the wall by peeling it off slowly. If the fabric does not peel away from the paint with ease, simply wet a sponge and dampen the fabric as needed before pulling it off of the wall. The water will break up the fabric starch making it easier to remove the fabric. You can even reuse the fabric for a different purpose by washing it to remove the fabric starch from the cloth.
