How My Exercise Routine Has Improved My Outlook and My Health

Sometimes we forget how important exercise really is, until we take a break from our routine and find ourselves without the energy and stamina that we’re used to. Most of my adult life, I’ve found a way to keep up my exercise habit, whether through old fashioned aerobics, dancing, running, or hiking.

I’m grateful that I grew up in an area where a lot more people are prone to eating healthy and taking care of their bodies. When I moved to a town in the mid-west, in an area known for eating a lot more junk food and red meat, not to mention a severe lack of good, fresh produce, my healthful habits seemed to go out the window. My exercise habit was also quickly lost.

Over about a two-year period, I put on 15 pounds. I returned to the west coast late last year, and knew the time for excuses was running out, but getting back to good habits isn’t easy. When I went on a moderately steep hike with my teenage daughter, I found myself gasping for breath for the first time in my life. That’s when it really sank in. Time to get back in shape.

Since then, I have developed a routine that has helped me to get closer to my ideal weight, and more importantly, to have the energy I need to get through the day, or participate in outdoor activities that I love.

I’m fortunate that I live near the beach, as it’s a lot more motivating to get up in the morning and run when you have some spectacular scenery to look at. If you can, incorporate exercise with something you enjoy; such as a walk or hike in the woods, or any pleasing landscape that is easily accessible.

I’ve also found that wearing a pedometer (there are many free cell phone apps available for this too), can help keep you motivated to go just a little bit farther.

I tend to run an average of five times a week, varying the length and intensity of my workout. One day, I will try to increase my mileage, whereas the next, I won’t push myself as hard. It’s important to not to do much too soon and risk injury.

When I come back home from my run, I walk in order to cool down, and then do some stretching. When stretching is missed, your sore muscles will regret it later.

Five pound hand weights are perfect for toning muscle without bulking up too much. I’ve been using Kathy Smith’s DVD, “Lift Weights to Lose Weight”, off and on for many years, and it is one of the best basic routines out there. Building muscle is important to raise your metabolism and will help you burn calories more efficiently.

Lastly, I’ve found that yoga also does wonders for toning and flexibility. Practicing yoga just a few times a week, helps me feel more physically and emotionally balanced, and is an amazing stress reducer.

Now that I’m back into my routine, I wonder how I ever let myself lose this great habit. I feel better, sleep better, look better, not to mention feeling much more of control of my life.
