Things you will need:

Fabric stiffener or Elmer’s glue

Full size white bed sheet cut into 2 ½ inch strips

Balloons different shapes and sizes mostly long shaped balloons

Masking tape

Large plastic mixing bowl

Needle

You will need a large clean area to work in, a kitchen table or counter top will do fine. The floor will be okay too, but you will be doing a lot of bending and stooping and this project could take a few hours to do. Where ever you choose to build your mummy keep in mind that it takes at least 24 hours for the fabric stiffener to completely dry.

Building Your Mummy’s Body

Beginning with the head you will be building a human body form out of the balloons. Find yourself a round shaped balloon and blow it up to about the size of a human head.

Next you will need to create a neck and shoulders, do this by using 2 or 3 short balloon taped together for the neck. It has to be as close to the correct size as possible.

Now for the shoulders, blow up a long balloon, make it between 2 to 2 ½ feet long, lay the balloon crossways beneath the neck and tape into place.

The mummy’s body will need to be made from 5 or 6 of the longest balloons that you have. Blow all the balloons to their max and tape together in a bundle to make the shape of a person’s body, tape that to the shoulders.

Don’t tape the legs or arms to the body until after the mummy wrapping has begun.

Make the mummy’s leg using long balloons as well, the thighs should take around 3 or four balloons taped together, and the shins should take half as many of the same type balloons.

Use shorter balloons to make the feet and tape them to the legs. You can use tape to further form the body if you need to.

You will use the same type balloons to create your mummy’s arms (do not attach the arms or legs to the body yet)

Prepare To Wrap Your Mummy

To begin pour about half of the fabric stiffener or Elmer’s glue into the large mixing bowl. Gather your fabric strips and place 2 or 3 into the mixing bowl making sure that the strips are completely soaked in the stiffening solution.

Keep in mind as you wrap be sure that your strips are over lapping each other for the most part, but do leave an occasional opening between the strips so that your trick-or-treaters can see inside and know that the man inside is invisible.

Wrapping Your Mummy

Now that you have all the mummy’s body parts made and put together you can begin the wrapping of the mummy. Remove one strip and begin wrapping your mummy starting with the arms and legs. Wrap the arms and legs all the way up to about 3 inches from the top and lay the arms to the side and attach the legs to the torso using masking tape.

Next begin wrapping the rest of the mummy starting at the head and wrap the entire torso and down the legs until all the balloons are covered. When you have finished wrapping the body you can attach the arms and legs using the fabric strips.

Start wrapping a second layer of the torso just above the waist. Place the mummy’s arms on each side and wrap into place starting right below where the fabric stops on the arms and continue up to around the mummy’s neck.

The Fun Part

Allow 24 to 48 hours for the fabric stiffener to completely dry. It is very important that the solution be 100% dry before you move to the last step.

After you are certain that the fabric is dry take the needle and begin popping the balloons inside of the mummy. If you want you can remove the balloons and left over tape from the back of the mummy.

Now your mummy is complete, all there is left for you to do is have fun showing off your handy work and frightening trick-or-treaters.
