Grimm Spooks Halloween on NBC

This Halloween is reeling with old movies, new horror flicks, and GRIMM. As a girl I read every Brothers Grimm tale I could get my hands on. Finally a new television show named GRIMM. All things Grimm are just beginning for me again this Halloween.

David Giuntoli plays Nick Burkhardt, a homicide police detective in Portland, Oregon, who becomes aware of his ancestral past forcing him into his future as a Grimm-creature profiler and supernatural creature hunter.

His Aunt Marie abruptly appears and commands his attention and time and ultimately hands him a green metal item, that he soon discovers is a key, with the admonition of never losing it though she does not share its significance. She is not just his adoring aunt but also his ninja-like warrior aunt who has many scars from her encounters during her Grimm life. What will Nick likely stumble upon now that his ancestral lineage has caught up with him? Merely some hags, wolves, trolls, great toothy and face-contorted creatures who are committing crimes in our present day. How did they get out of the pages of the Grimm Fairy Tale books? Ah, yes, the magic of film.

Just as abruptly as Aunt Marie appeared, so did her trailer of artifacts, documents, weapons, and all things needed for Burkhardt to succeed in the world of Grimm Portland.

A new word or long forgotten word enters this century, a wolfish Blutbad. Bad word for Nick Burkhardt to come to grips with, especially in the plural form of many Blutbaden werewolf creatures. Avoid a pack of Blutbaden, especially if you are wearing red as it can make them unpleasantly violent.

Does Grimm live in a world with any good Blutbadden? Yes, if they are religiously restrictive about their diet, exercise and drug program, then they are only Wieder Blutbaden who can avoid morphing into wild animal creatures. Wieder or weirder, whatever; what happens if they mess up their strict regimen?

The world of Grimm has a lot of bright green mossy trees and buildings. Hansel and Gretal quickly jumped to mind in the premiere episode when a postman lived in a very warm-glowing cottage eerily reminiscent of a bad witch’s enticing dwelling. Bad cottage to visit when you are wearing red which alters the postman’s disposition menacingly.

The imaginatively geeky production designer is Michael Wylie who creates the Grimm world with many visually beautiful scenes and scenery, mixed at times with the dark side bleeding through. The feel of the screen is that of a wickedly beautiful fantasy world where mysteries abound. German items such as Volkswagens and Hummels appear throughout the storyline. The Grimms are German, after all. The current Portland with its tall buildings and newness blends alongside the cottage-like Portland plagued by Grimm tales. All that misty rain and the forests of Portland has to be a help to the production team, doesn’t it, especially in the premiere episode reminiscent of Little Red Riding Hood?

Appears that Grimm’s partner is sucked into his supernatural hunting adventures. Russell Hornsby stars as Hank Griffin, who seems to have a fairly good grip on how to comically partner in extreme conditions. A third member of this crime fighting group is a reformed Blutbat, Silas Weir Mitchell, who plays Eddie Monroe reluctantly assisting Grimm and Griffin with their adventures.

Don’t trick or treat in Portland and when living there, don’t wear red!

What’s next? Bears Will Be Bears. Then? Grip that remote and watch.
