Girlfriend’s Travel Guide to Cape Town, South Africa like the ‘Real Housewives of Atlanta’

When I was a kid growing up in NY, my dad went on an extended business trip to South Africa. He worked in precious metals so he was looking forward to seeing what what happening with the South African mining situation. However, as an Afro-Caribbean man, he was most thrilled about visiting the motherland; and by proxy we were all just as jubilant for him.

When my father returned to Queens he was a changed man. His skin and eyes were clear and he was smiling bigger than he ever had. Before visiting Africa, my dad was the kind of man who came home from work in his posh business suit and then changed into a more casual suit to relax. It was the first time that I learned that even adults could learn, grow and evolve.

I remember thinking, wow, if Africa had that much power over my father, I wonder what it could do for me. When I finally got the opportunity to visit the motherland myself it was a couple of years ago. Instead of South Africa, I headed to West Africa. My Nigerian trip was an incredible whirlwind of history, culture beauty, magic and the ugliness of history.

This past week my girls Bravo’s “Real Housewives of Atlanta” took a trip to Cape Town in South Africa. In true reality TV style, the ladies brought heated drama and stress to their Girlfriends Getaway. And that was just on day one of a ten day trip! Your Girlfriends Getaway to Cape Town will be much more drama-free hopefully, but every bit as magnificent.

Here’s what to do in Cape Town South Africa to indulge in all of the history, culture, wine and great eats that SA has to offer:

Robben Island Prison Museum

When we think of South Africa we think of Nelson Mandela and vice versa. Robben Island Prison is where the courageous activist leader spent 27 years in prison for nothing more than refusing to accept his societal place as a second class citizen. Many other black political prisoners also were held in the prison, which has now become a commemorative museum. Former dissidents guide visitors through the experience. This is a World Heritage Site. Daily ferry trips to Robben Island leave from the Clock Tower Precinct at the V&A Waterfront. Book in advance by calling + 27 (0)21 413 4200.

South African Wine Tours

South Africa is known for its magnificent wines. Cape Town and the surrounding areas are home to many famous vineyards that are open to the public almost daily for wine tours and delicious tastings. In many cases you can even meet the winemakers and their families. The Constantia Valley Wine Route probably offers the most opportunities with wine estates, fine eateries and shopping.

Where to Eat

You can’t turn around in Cape Town without running into great food. After all, South Africa is a convergence of many cultures so of course the food would have a mix as well. Eziko Restaurant, an extension of Eziko Cooking and Catering School, is a popular place to grab a bite to eat. Call +27 (0)21 694 0434 for more information. Eziko is located in Lango Township. Find travel details on their website. You can also indulge in authentic local food at The Africa Cafe at the intersection of Buitengracht and Shortmarket Streets. For serving times call +27 (0)21 422 0221.

Music

You can’t visit South Africa without having a musical experience. Mama Africa Restaurant not only offers food but wonderful live music. Call the Long Street Location for details at +27 (0)21 426 1017.

You can also get your dance on at Club Africa. The club features an eclectic mix of live music and African dance music from across the continent every weekend. Club Africa is located at Lower Main and Station Road in Observatory. Find Club Africa at +27 (0)21 464 7126.

Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls

Oprah’s Leadership Academy is not a part of African history, but it is certainly a global treasure. While you can’t walk up and barrage your way in to this center where children are learning, it is wonderful to see the pay-it-forward fruits of Lady O’s hard labor. The school is located at 534 Wargrave South Road, Henley-on-Klip, Meyerton, 1961. Call +27 (0) 16 366-9000 to make a donation. What an incredible way for American history and African history to reconnect in a positive way.

Of course that’s all just for starters. Wishing you a wonderful South African trip. Send me a postcard!
